I have a habit of sketching on the side of my notebook paper (back when I actually had to take notes in a notebook). Occasionally, I’d also celebrate the commencement of a grueling homework assignment with a small sketch (10 seconds tops) towards the end of the paper, in a spot which shouldn’t distract. Usually they were well received. I never wanted extra points or anything, just hoped to give myself mental relief and, maybe even the grader, mental relief.
Unfortunately, my TA for discrete math didn’t take to it well. Among all the red marks, he left one for the drawing of the pig too which read along the lines of, “What is this?!?!?!?!?! Unacceptable.” Aside from the fact he just couldn’t ignore it, the drawing was actually relevant to the material. The accompanied lecture explained the particular concepts using animal analogies (pigs, monkeys, etc.)
Luckily, in all other occasions when I received replies, they were great ones. Some followed-up with humor and wit, others simply penned a smiley. All-in-all, I sketch everyday as a HCI’er and will be doing so for a living.
May the TA with no sense of enlightenment find some someday.
